The First Steps For Getting Your Fluids Under Control

Symptoms vary and there are no stock answers. However, most equipment problems can be traced back to one of three situations.

Which challenge are you facing? Contamination? Moisture? Temperature?

Contamination Control

Symptoms:

  • Flecks — visible or microscopic — in your fluid
  • Fluid becomes darker and has an odor
  • Operating temperature gradually rising
  • Operating speed gradually slowing
  • Constantly adjusting your valve settings

What we need to know when you call:

  • At what pressure does your machine operate?
  • Which of the following components is involved?
    • Servo Valve
    • Variable Piston Pump
    • Proportional Valve
    • PC Flow Control
    • Fixed Piston Pump
    • Vane Pump
    • Others
  • Are you using water bearing fluids or phosphate ester?

Moisture Control

Symptoms:

  • Milky oil
  • Corrosion visible on internal parts
  • Water or oil leakage

What we need to know when you call:

  • What is your current moisture content in ppm or percentage?
  • What type of oil are you using and what is the viscosity grade?
  • At what oil temperature does the equipment normally operate?

Temperature Control

Symptoms:

  • Metal parts that are taking on a bluish tint
  • Operating hot — housing and parts hot to the touch
  • Oil bubbling out or over

What we need to know when you call:

  • What oil type and viscosity grade are you using?
  • At what oil temperature does your system operate?
  • Do you have water available for cooling? What temperature is the water?
